Free Plugins & DAW's Worth Downloading

New Free Plugins and DAWs Worth Downloading Now

Free audio software gets announced constantly, and the announcements are mixed together: permanently free plugins, limited-time giveaways, trials with a free label, and freemium tools that stop being useful without an upgrade. This article sorts the new free plugins and DAWs into one list, says who each suits, and states the catch for each. Where a deeper write-up exists on this site, the link goes to it instead of repeating it here.

How I filtered the list: what counts as free and what I cut

A plugin or DAW counts as free here if you can download it and use it for music without paying, and the free version does something useful on its own. A free account or email signup is fine, as long as it is stated up front. A limited-time giveaway counts too, but it is labeled as one, because that kind of free can end.

Four kinds of products were cut:

  • Demos and trials that expire or stop saving and exporting. These are free to try, not free to use.
  • Freemium tools where the free version is too restricted to finish a track with.
  • Free bundles that only work with a paid host, such as a plugin that needs a subscription to load.
  • Anything I could not confirm is currently available. Free offers disappear, and a list of dead links is worse than a short list.

Each entry below has three parts: what it is, who it suits, and the catch. If an entry has a deeper post, the link is in the entry.

Free plugins from Plugin Alliance and Slate Digital worth the download

Plugin Alliance and Slate Digital both run free offers from time to time, and these are the ones most people ask about. Their offers change often, so a fixed list of names printed here could be out of date by the time you read it. The current offers sit on each company’s own page, and that is where to check what is free today.

What matters more is a short check to run before you download anything from either company:

  1. Is it permanently free or part of a promotion? A promotional freebie often has an end date. Claim it before then, because it may be a different story afterward.
  2. What do you need to create? Expect an account on the vendor’s site and an installer or manager app. Budget ten minutes for this, not ten seconds.
  3. Which formats are included? Confirm the plugin ships in the format your DAW loads. Logic Pro, for example, uses Audio Units, while many other DAWs use VST3.
  4. Does it need a license manager? If a plugin requires an authorization step, do that during setup, not five minutes before a session.
  5. Does the license allow commercial use? For music you release or sell, read the terms on the download page.

For producers weighing a mixing or channel-strip freebie, the useful question is whether it does something your DAW’s stock plugins cannot. A free compressor that sounds a little different from the one already in your DAW is a fine addition to a template. A free plugin that duplicates a stock tool and adds a login is probably not worth the setup.

Free effects and character plugins already tested on the channel

These plugins already have their own posts, so each entry is short and points to the deeper write-up.

13X Audio COLONY 2.0

COLONY 2.0 is a free multi-effect plugin with 11 effects in one. It suits producers who want a single plugin for quick sound design on a bus or an individual track, without loading a chain of separate tools. The catch is the same as with any multi-effect: one plugin holding eleven effects means one place to learn, but you may still prefer a dedicated plugin for a task you do constantly.

Aurora by 13X Audio

Aurora is a free dynamic EQ with advanced musical features. It suits mixers who deal with problem frequencies that only show up some of the time, like a harsh vocal note or a boomy bass note. A dynamic EQ has more controls than a static one, so expect to spend a session learning where it helps.

Sonic Cascade THE DREAM

THE DREAM is a free analog character plugin. It suits anyone who wants warmth and color on drums, synths or a mix bus without paying for a character processor. As with any character plugin, bypass it regularly while you work, since color you stop noticing can slowly pile up across a session.

Toaster and Overdo

Toaster and Overdo are two free plugins covering saturation and multiband compression. They suit producers building a mixing chain on a budget. Multiband compression is easy to overdo, so start with gentle settings and compare against the bypassed signal.

The Relic Collection reverbs

The Relic Collection added two new free reverb plugins. They suit songwriters and producers who want more reverb choices for vocals, keys and ambient material. Several reverbs sounding good in solo does not mean they sit well in a full mix, so audition them in context.

M-Media Audio

M-Media Audio offers eight free plugins. This pack suits people who want a collection to browse through instead of one tool. The catch is volume: eight plugins means eight things to test. Pick the one that fills a gap and ignore the rest until you need them.

New free DAWs and studios you can try without paying

Free DAWs are rarer than free plugins, and a free DAW costs you more in switching time than a plugin does. Two entries are on the radar.

MorningDAW brings together a broad selection of music production features, including built-in synthesizers, MIDI tools, recording and mixing functions, third-party plugin support, vocal processing, and music video export.

Splice Create is an AI-powered music production studio. The first-look post covers what it does, and a second post on making tracks shows it in use. It suits people curious about AI-assisted song building. Check the pricing and account requirements on Splice’s own page before you assume it is free for your use.

If you already own a DAW you like, a new free DAW is mostly worth trying for curiosity, or as a second environment for sketching. Moving a finished catalog to a new DAW costs real time.

The catches: limited-time offers, accounts and installers

Free software comes with friction, and it is easier to handle when you know what to expect.

Limited-time offers

Some free plugins are free for a window of time. Black Salt Audio Low Control and the UJAM distortion plugin were both covered as limited-time freebies. Before relying on either, check the vendor’s page to see whether the offer is still open. If you miss a window, the plugin may be paid again.

The Waves Black Friday giveaway works through a signup. It is not an instant download, so read the entry rules on the post and on the Waves page.

If you claim a limited-time plugin, keep the installer and your license information somewhere safe. A claimed license usually stays with your account, but a reinstall on a new computer is easier with the files saved.

Accounts and email lists

Many free plugins require a vendor account, and some add you to a marketing list. Use an email address you are comfortable getting promotions at, and look for an unsubscribe option in the first message.

Installers and managers

Some vendors use a dedicated installer or manager app. These are fine, but they can take a while to set up the first time, and they sometimes need a restart of your DAW or a plugin rescan. If a freshly installed plugin does not show up, rescan your plugin list first, then check that you installed the right format.

Stability and CPU

A free plugin that crashes your session is not free. Install new plugins on a copy of a project, not on a deadline, and keep an eye on CPU use if you plan to run several copies.

What to install first, depending on what you make

Installing everything on a list is a good way to end up with a cluttered plugin menu. Pick by the work you do.

If you mix your own songs:

  • Start with Aurora for problem frequencies that come and go.
  • Add Toaster and Overdo if you want saturation and multiband compression in one go.

If you make beats or lo-fi tracks:

  • Try THE DREAM for analog color on drums and samples.
  • Try COLONY 2.0 for quick effect chains on loops.

If you write songs and need space around vocals and keys:

  • Try the Relic Collection reverbs.
  • Pick one reverb and learn it before collecting more.

If you like heavy or distorted sounds:

  • The UJAM distortion plugin and Black Salt Audio Low Control are both worth a look if the offers are still open.

If you want to browse a bundle:

  • M-Media Audio’s eight plugins give you a set to explore on your own schedule.

If you want a different DAW to experiment in:

  • ProWave suits Windows and Linux users who want something Logic-like, and Splice Create suits people curious about AI-assisted tracks.

For most people, a good first step is two or three plugins, tested on a real project, with the rest left alone until a track calls for them. Plugins you actually use for months are worth more than plugins you downloaded once.

What I skipped and why

Everything on this list has a reason to be there, and the same standards decide what is left out.

  • Trials sold as free. If the plugin stops working after a set number of days, it does not belong in a list of free tools.
  • Crippled freemium versions. If the free version cannot export, save or run at normal quality, it is a demo.
  • Offers I could not confirm. Free promotions end, and a name with no confirmed availability would only send you to a dead page.
  • Duplicates of stock tools. A free EQ or compressor that behaves like the one already in your DAW adds an installer and an account for no gain. Entries here do something your stock plugins either do differently or do not do at all.
  • Hype-driven releases. A tool being new is not a reason to include it. A plugin is on the list because it does a specific job well for a specific producer.

The Plugin Alliance and Slate Digital offers are the ones most likely to change between now and the next update to this list, so check each company’s page for the current free items and run the five-point check above before you download.
