13X Audio COLONY 2.0 is a free multi-effect plugin that combines 11 different effects, modulation tools, sequencing, and sound-shaping capabilities in one interface. With the ability to combine up to six effects at once and control multiple parameters using its central ENERGY control, COLONY offers an interesting approach to creative audio processing.
In this video, I take a closer look at COLONY 2.0, explore its interface, check out some of the presets, and demonstrate some of the effects and processing options.
11 Effects in One Plugin
COLONY 2.0 includes 11 effect modules called Cells. Each Cell provides a different type of processing, giving you access to a variety of creative effects without having to load multiple plugins.
The available effects include:
- DRIVE: Saturation, distortion, and harmonic processing.
- MOTION: Modulation and movement effects.
- SPACE: Spatial processing and reverb.
- PUMP: Dynamic movement and pumping effects.
- WIDTH: Stereo enhancement and widening.
- COLOR: Tonal shaping and coloration.
- GLITCH: Glitch and experimental effects.
- ECHO: Delay and echo processing.
- PUNCH: Transient and impact shaping.
- PITCH: Pitch-shifting effects.
- FILTER: Frequency and tonal filtering.
You can use up to six Cells simultaneously and rearrange them within the six available processing positions. This gives you flexibility when building different effect combinations.
The ENERGY Control
One of the more interesting features of COLONY 2.0 is its central ENERGY control. Rather than adjusting every effect individually, ENERGY allows you to change multiple effects simultaneously.
You can control ENERGY manually, automate it in your DAW, synchronize it to your project timeline, or have it respond to the incoming audio signal.
This makes it possible to create gradual changes in a sound, automate more dramatic transformations, or build transitions and drops using multiple effects together.
Sequencing, Modulation and MORPH
COLONY also includes several tools for creating movement and changing sounds over time.
The 16-step sequencer provides rhythmic control, while the LFO and envelope modulation options give you additional ways to influence the effects.
The MORPH feature allows you to transition between two different sounds, making it useful for creating evolving textures, automated changes, and more experimental sound design.
PLAY, TWEAK and BUILD
The plugin is organized into three main interface views.
- PLAY: Access presets and work with the main controls.
- TWEAK: Adjust individual effects and their parameters.
- BUILD: Configure how the effects move, interact, and respond to modulation.
During the video, I also explore some of the available presets and demonstrate the DRIVE module, including its Analog Tube Crunch setting. Other controls include input level, level matching, and a dry/wet adjustment.
System Compatibility and Plugin Formats
13X Audio COLONY 2.0 is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Supported plugin formats include VST3, Audio Unit, CLAP, and LV2, depending on the operating system.
