Steven Slate Audio has released an update to its VSX virtual monitoring software that brings a new option for Apple AirPods Pro users. The new MSX software allows you to explore virtual studio monitoring environments using AirPods Pro, without necessarily purchasing the dedicated Steven Slate VSX headphones.
This is an interesting development for music producers who want to check their mixes through different studio monitors, listening rooms, and playback systems without investing in additional hardware.

Steven Slate Audio MSX for Apple AirPods Pro
The biggest news is the addition of MSX support for Apple AirPods Pro.
Previously, Steven Slate Audio’s VSX system was primarily associated with its dedicated headphones, which work alongside the VSX software to recreate different acoustic environments.
With the new MSX option, Apple AirPods Pro owners can now try the virtual monitoring experience without purchasing the dedicated VSX headphones.
There is also a 14-day free trial, giving you an opportunity to download the software, configure everything, and see how it works with your existing AirPods Pro.
Existing VSX headphone owners can also check the available upgrade pricing for MSX.
How Does VSX Virtual Monitoring Work?
The VSX system uses headphone modeling to recreate the listening experience of different professional studio environments.
Instead of relying entirely on your room or the sound of your headphones, you can switch between modeled monitoring environments and compare how your mix sounds.
Some of the available options include:
- Nearfield studio monitor simulations.
- Midfield studio monitor simulations.
- Different professionally modeled listening rooms.
- Headphone monitoring environments.
- Additional playback systems and expansion packs.
One interesting feature is personalized ear calibration. During setup, the software runs an ear test designed to account for differences in how you hear frequencies, including the high and low end.
The idea is to make the virtual monitoring experience better suited to your individual hearing.
You can also purchase additional expansion packs or choose a larger collection of modeled environments.
New Horizon One Headphones
Steven Slate Audio is also introducing the Horizon One closed-back headphones.
These headphones are positioned as another option within the VSX ecosystem and are priced at approximately $400 before the advertised holiday discount.
The Horizon One headphones are a separate hardware option, while the new MSX support gives AirPods Pro owners another way to access the virtual monitoring technology.
How to Get Started With MSX
Getting started requires downloading the software and setting up an account through iLok.
If you’re interested in testing the new AirPods Pro functionality, Steven Slate Audio is offering a 14-day free trial.
There is also a holiday season sale, so it’s worth checking the current pricing and upgrade options before making a purchase.

Is VSX Worth Trying With AirPods Pro?
The addition of Apple AirPods Pro support makes the VSX ecosystem more accessible to people who already own compatible headphones.
Rather than immediately investing in dedicated VSX headphones, you can try the software first and decide whether the virtual monitoring environments fit into your mixing workflow.
If you’re already using VSX, the MSX upgrade is also worth investigating.
