Warm Repeats: A Free Tape Delay Plugin from M Media Audio

Warm Repeats by M Media Audio is a free tape delay plugin that combines three tape heads, seven echo configurations, tape saturation, wow and flutter, tone controls, and spring reverb. In this video, I put it to the test on guitar, strings, vocals, and drums to explore its sound and see how far its effects can be pushed.

Watch the video below to hear Warm Repeats in action.

What Is Warm Repeats?

Warm Repeats is a tape-style delay effect designed to produce everything from short slapback echoes to more complex, evolving delay patterns. Rather than simply repeating the original signal, the plugin processes the feedback path with tape-style characteristics that can change the sound as the echoes repeat.

The plugin is available from M Media Audio and provides several ways to shape the tone, timing, and atmosphere of a delay without needing separate effects for tape character and spring reverb.

Three Tape Heads and Seven Combinations

Warm Repeats features three tape heads: short, medium, and long. Each can be used individually, or you can combine them in seven different configurations to create different echo patterns.

The Repeat control adjusts the delay time, while Intensity determines how much of the signal feeds back into the effect. These controls provide the foundation for shaping the timing and number of repeats.

The feedback path also includes tape saturation, wow, flutter, and tone shaping. As a result, the echoes can develop their own character instead of remaining identical copies of the original sound.

Fresh and Worn Tape Character

The plugin includes two tape age settings: Fresh and Worn.

Fresh produces a cleaner, tighter delay sound. Worn introduces additional movement and rolls off high frequencies more quickly, giving the repeats a softer, more aged character.

Bass and treble controls provide further tonal adjustment, while separate Echo Level and Reverb Level controls let you balance the delayed signal with the plugin’s built-in spring reverb.

The spring reverb runs alongside the tape delay, providing another way to add space and character to an instrument or vocal.

Testing Warm Repeats on Different Instruments

In the video, I demonstrate Warm Repeats on four types of musical material to hear how the effect responds to different sources.

  • Guitar: Hear how the delay adds repeating echoes and movement to a guitar part.
  • Strings: Explore the effect of tape-style repeats on sustained instrumental sounds.
  • Vocals: Try a short slapback setting for a vocal doubling effect before pushing the processing into more extreme territory.
  • Drums: Apply a slap preset to the drum bus and compare the sound with the effect bypassed and enabled.

These demonstrations show how the same plugin can be used for different purposes, from subtle enhancement to more obvious rhythmic and textural effects.

Pushing the Feedback Into Self-Oscillation

One of the more experimental features is the ability to push Intensity beyond 100 percent. This can drive Warm Repeats into self-oscillation, producing increasingly intense feedback effects.

This setting can quickly get out of hand, so it requires some care. However, it also opens up possibilities for unusual textures and sound design beyond conventional delay effects.

Is Warm Repeats Worth Trying?

Warm Repeats combines tape delay, multiple tape-head configurations, tape character, tonal controls, and spring reverb in one free plugin. Its range makes it worth exploring if you’re looking for a delay effect that can handle both straightforward musical applications and more experimental sounds.
