In this video, I explore LEGA Effect’s presets, try it on high hats, and demonstrate some of its telephone, vocal, and lo-fi effects. I also take a look at the built-in EQ, Intensity, Mix, and Auto Gain controls.

What Is LEGA Effect?

LEGA Effect is a free audio effects plugin designed to make audio sound as though it’s coming through a particular device, communication system, recording medium, or physical space.

Rather than simply offering a collection of EQ presets, the plugin uses different combinations of processing to create the character of each effect. Depending on the preset, this can include distortion, noise, signal degradation, modulation, reverb, and other processing elements.

The plugin includes 100 presets organized into nine categories:

  • Telephone
  • Cellular
  • Internet
  • Radio and Comms
  • Speakers and PA
  • Recorded Media
  • Enclosed
  • Voice Characters
  • Creative Effects

This makes it useful for music production, vocal processing, sound design, and adding distinctive effects to audio for videos and other media.

Telephone, Radio, and Communication Effects

One of the first things I tried was the telephone category. Presets include Party Line, Hotel Motel, Prison Visit Phone, Early Cellular, Weak Signal, Speaker Mode, Car Handsfree Call, Voicemail, and Budget Handset.

These effects can give a vocal the character of an old landline, a mobile phone with a weak signal, or a speakerphone conversation.

The radio and communication-style effects offer additional possibilities for broadcast voices, announcements, and other spoken-word applications.

Creative Vocal Effects and Sound Design

LEGA Effect also includes presets for broadcast voices, late-night radio hosts, narrators, movie trailers, and more unusual character effects.

Some presets incorporate effects such as whisper processing, vocoder, chorus, and reverb. The individual presets have their own processing combinations, so selecting a different preset changes the effect chain rather than simply changing an EQ curve.

I also tried the plugin on high hats to hear how it could affect an instrument rather than just a voice.

These kinds of effects can be useful for vocal throws, transitions, experimental percussion, and other creative production techniques.

Built-In EQ and Controls

Although the presets do much of the heavy lifting, LEGA Effect includes several controls for adjusting the results.

Intensity adjusts the strength of the effect, while Mix blends the processed sound with the original signal. Auto Gain is available to help manage volume differences when comparing settings.

The built-in EQ lets you move the curves directly on the display, giving you another way to shape the sound to fit your mix.

One important detail is that the presets have their own processing configurations. You can adjust the available controls, but you don’t necessarily get individual access to every effect inside each preset.

Vinyl, Cassette, and Lo-Fi Effects

The Recorded Media category is worth exploring if you work with lo-fi music or want to add the character of older recording formats.

Presets such as Record, Worn Vinyl, and Cassette provide starting points for creating sounds associated with older playback and recording equipment.

The plugin also includes effects such as Next Room and Monster, which open up possibilities for environmental sound design, unusual vocal treatments, and more exaggerated effects.
