XLN Audio RC-20 Retro Color v2: A New Echo Module and More Creative Effects

XLN Audio has released RC-20 Retro Color v2, bringing several new features and creative possibilities to one of the most recognizable sound-coloring plugins in music production.

The biggest addition is the new Echo module, which takes RC-20 beyond its traditional vintage coloration, saturation, and lo-fi effects.

Watch the video below to hear some of the new features in action.

The New Echo Module

The standout feature in RC-20 Retro Color v2 is the new Echo module. This isn’t simply a conventional delay effect. It offers a range of creative controls that let you transform repeats into evolving textures and unusual sound effects.

You can experiment with feedback, stereo width, ping-pong, ducking, and filtering. You can also process the left and right channels independently, opening up additional possibilities for stereo effects.

One particularly interesting feature is the ability to feed other RC-20 effects into the Echo processing, creating increasingly complex sounds as the feedback builds.

Grains, Pitch Ducking and Variable Speed

RC-20 v2 also introduces Grains, pitch ducking, and variable speed.

These features offer additional ways to manipulate delay trails and create unusual pitched, rhythmic, and atmospheric textures.

Combined with the new Echo module, they make RC-20 a much more interesting tool for experimental sound design.

New Space and Distortion Options

There are also additions to the existing effects modules.

The Space module gets additional reverb types, giving you more options for shaping the environment and character of your sounds.

The Distort module includes new distortion flavors, including Porta, while the Loss section introduces additional sound degradation options such as Kodak processing.

These additions expand the range of sounds you can create, from subtle vintage coloration to more extreme digital degradation.

Is RC-20 Retro Color v2 Worth Checking Out?

RC-20 has always been a useful plugin for adding character to drums, instruments, vocals, and just about anything else in a mix.

With version 2, XLN Audio has expanded the plugin with more creative effects and additional sound-design capabilities.

For me, the new Echo module is the most interesting addition. The ability to combine feedback with other effects creates some genuinely unusual sounds, and there’s plenty of room to experiment.

If you already use RC-20, version 2 gives you some new creative tools to explore.
