Looking for a free delay plugin that can do more than create ordinary echoes? D16 Echolite is a free stereo delay effect for Mac and Windows that combines tempo synchronization, flexible filtering, stereo widening, and extreme feedback for some seriously unusual sounds.
In this video, I put D16 Echolite to the test on a drum loop and guitar to see what this free plugin can do.
Watch the video below to hear D16 Echolite in action.
What Is D16 Echolite?
D16 Echolite is a free stereo delay plugin from D16 Group. It gives music producers a collection of controls for shaping echoes, manipulating stereo width, and creating more experimental delay effects.
What makes it interesting is how quickly the sound can change with just a few adjustments. Rather than limiting you to straightforward repeats, Echolite lets you combine delay timing, filtering, stereo processing, and feedback to create a wide range of results.
If you’re building a collection of free music production plugins, it’s worth taking a closer look.
D16 Echolite Features
Here are some of the main features I explore in the video.
Tempo-Synced Delay and Pre-Delay
Echolite includes tempo synchronization for setting delay timing in relation to your project, along with an adjustable pre-delay control for shaping when the effect begins.
These controls give you flexibility when working with rhythmic material, guitars, and other sources that benefit from carefully timed echoes.
Built-In Filter With Multiple Modes
The built-in filter includes four modes:
- Low-pass
- High-pass
- Band-pass
- Band-reject
You can also adjust the filter slope to shape the frequency content of the delayed signal. This makes it possible to create anything from darker, more subdued repeats to sharper, more focused effects.
Stereo Spread and Post-Filter Processing
One of the more interesting parts of my demonstration is the stereo spread control in the post-filter section.
Adjusting stereo spread can make the delay sound wider and more unusual, particularly when combined with filtering. It’s one of the controls that makes Echolite fun to experiment with rather than simply using it for conventional echoes.
Extreme Feedback and MIDI Learn
Echolite allows feedback to go beyond 100 percent, opening the door to more intense and sustained delay effects.
It also includes MIDI Learn, allowing you to assign plugin parameters to compatible external MIDI hardware controllers.
Testing Echolite on Drums and Guitar
In the video, I start with a drum loop to demonstrate how Echolite handles rhythmic material. The stereo spread and filtering controls can substantially change the character of the repeats.
Next, I switch to guitar and explore some of the plugin’s built-in presets. Hearing the effect on a different source provides another perspective on its range of sounds.
The results demonstrate how Echolite can move beyond standard delay duties into more experimental territory.
Is D16 Echolite Worth Trying?
If you’re looking for a free stereo delay plugin for music production, D16 Echolite is worth checking out. Its combination of tempo synchronization, pre-delay, multiple filter modes, stereo spread, and feedback control offers plenty of options for sound design.
I particularly enjoyed experimenting with the stereo spread and hearing how quickly the effect could become more extreme. The included presets also give you a convenient starting point for exploring its sound.
You don’t need to spend money to experiment with creative delay effects.
